August 3, 1864, Lincoln to Grant

Lincoln did not impose himself on the activities of General Grant as much as he had on other generals. Nevertheless he was not shy about expressing his opinion. After he and Grant had differences regarding Grant's decision about the defense of Washington, Lincoln sent Grant a "Dutch Uncle" telegram. In it, the president reminds Grant that, while he approves of a recent appointment and Grant's plans, Grant needs to exercise vigilance "every day, and hour, and force it" if he is to achieve the desired results.
