February 1, 1865, Lincoln to Grantt

In early 1865, the Lincoln administration conducted clandestine peace discussions with representatives of the Confederate government. Lest there be any confusion in Grant's mind about military activities during this period, Lincoln instructed Grant, "Let nothing which is transpiring, change, hinder, or delay your Military movements or plans."
